GMQ National Call-Out

Grenfell Memorial Quilt Community Project.

Calling out to all quilters, stitchers, sewers+embroidery crafters+creatives 🗣️HELP!! ’Sewing For Justice’ collective to complete a monumental task. Stitching a 220ft x 72ft Memorial quilt. The Dimensions of Grenfell Tower.

Grenfell Tower

UK’s largest fabric art memorial. That will not only commemorate, celebrate & memorialise the 72 souls whose bodies died in the Grenfell Tower inferno.

But will raise awareness of the social injustices that were highlighted i.e the gravely failing housing safety regulations plus the neglectful humane response to support the survivors and bereaved on the night of the tragedy, which was the worse in the UK since WW2.

If you’re interested & motivated by Social Justice causes join us by contributing your time + skills. Or donate cotton fabric to this monumental act of Craftivism.

Silent walk

We are asking all sewing/quilting bees, crafters groups & workshops to participate in UK’s largest collaboration of community craftivism.

Help us to complete our goal. For the 14|06|2027 the 10th year remembrance day of the Grenfell Tower inferno tragedy.

Craft + Art + Activism = Craftivism

SFJ collective aim to complete this ambitiousmission to stitch & sew 108 x 12sft quilt panels to amount to the dimensions of the Tower which is 220ft x 72ft. 90 panels in total to complete 18 of which are completed or nearing completion having been sewn by sewers from all over the Uk. Beautiful meaningful, heartfelt tributes which will embellish each (fabric wall designed background) have been made & sent in from Europe, Brazil, US, Mumbai and as far as Australia.
GMQ is a legacy art project. It’s a Memory Quilt an art quilt not a typical bedding comforter but it is to symbolise many definitions of a comforter. My personal belief is of God being the Almighty comforter. Creating for me & others is a form of prayer GMQ is a legacy of love expressed through creativity that the public can also be actively involved in the creation. It is polymorphic in that it changes through its ongoing development that inspires different responses with more levels of depth of meaning and expression that we hope will comfort all whilst we Memorialise|Commemorate|Celebrate & Raise awareness supporting the bereaved families in their long struggle for Justice in whatever form that takes for each individual.
Whilst each try to live with difficult circumstantial trauma, loss, pain, grief as well as departed from the community.
‘Sewing For Justice’ will also support the campaigning for safer homes to meet robust safety regulations.

The Process

The Grenfell Memorial Quilt will be made up of sections of 12ft x 12ft panels. Sections that will be displayed at local commemorative events.

The background design is like a fabric wall created by using a quilting technique called Jelly Roll. Using donated fabric which is cut into 2.5” strips & rolled for storage.

The strips are then sewn end to end to create yards of kaleidoscopic cloth of many colours, patterns and textures. We aptly named it.The Grenfell 2017 Cloth. (Incidently there is a well established Grenfell 1923 Cloth).

SFJ will use the Grenfell 2017 cloth for merchandise- a legacy product to memorialise the 72 souls who’s bodies perished in the Grenfell Tower inferno and to represent the essence of the people which make up the rich fabric of our North Kensington communities who will never forget.

Each 12ft x12ft panel is embellished with hand|machine sewn tributes.

So far the individual fabric pieces are distinctive, ornate pieces, that have been stitched, painted or written on with fabric pens or fabric paint, crocheted, embroidered & knitted.
